Literacy Analysis

For this essay, we were assigned to work as a team. We decided the theme surrounding beauty and the lens was physiological. We each chose the media we analyzed, such as poems, music videos, movies, and literature. Enjoy <3

Amanda Silveyra

She died for Beauty but was scarce- Emily Dickinson

For my analysis, my group and I chose the theme of beauty to be analyzed through the psychological lens. For my poem, I interpreted "I died for beauty but was scarce" by Emily Dickinson. Emily was a well-educated woman whose poems got published by her siblings after her death. In this poem, she discusses how dying for the ideals of beauty and truth will not hold any value after that person has perished. After they have died they will be forgotten

In Melanie Martinez's, "Mrs. Potatoe Head" music video, audiences are shown the struggles people of all types face against society's beauty standards. Our main character, Cry Baby, watches in horror as people on television get plastic surgery and "fix" their appearance to fit society's beauty standards. This is a constant struggle everywhere in the world as people try to fit into norms placed on them by society. This can lead to eating disorders and many mental health problems.

Literary Analysis: The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty

Mia Cruz Ramirez

For the literary analysis, my group decided to analyze a literary piece that had beauty as a theme. The book that I chose to analyze was The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty by Amanda Filipacchi through a psychological lens. The book focuses on the stereotypes society has placed on beauty. It tells the story of two women who seem to be affected by these beauty standards. One of them fights to avoid being affected by these standards while the other protagonist suffers due to her love interests ideas of beauty. The protagonists of the book are looking for love that does not depend on beauty.

“Your comments are entirely influenced by the fact that you think I’m unattractive,” she says. “If you thought I were beautiful, you wouldn’t be suggesting I might subconsciously think I am ugly.”

“No need to get defensive. And anyway, what I think doesn’t matter. It's what you think that matters. I want to try to help you to find yourself beautiful.”

“I already do.”

Literacy Analysis:
Fight Club

Fight Club, in its portrayal of the grimy and liberating underbelly of fighting for ones manhood, fundamentally altered the perceptions of young men around the nation regarding their self-image and what they aspire to be. Though, digging deeper, this film is an honest and right critique of that lifestyle, arguing that it is just as corrupt as the life and image it is trying to leave behind.

Much of the film's appeal comes from its main antagonist, Tyler Durden, portrayed by Brad Pitt. He embodies perfectly the toxic masculine ideals that so many young men fall for.
